Time your child reading an unfamiliar story or passage for one minute
Count the total number
of words read and subtract the number of errors from it
This will give the words
read per minute.
Go over words missed in the story and practice reading the story before the second timed reading
Do at least two timed readings of the story
Make sure to keep track of how your child does by recording the results on a graph or a piece of paper
Show your child how much they improved from the first time they read the story
